There are dogs who enjoy tennis balls, and then there is Birdie May, who has built an entire belief system around them. We see it as a love story, Birdie and her Ball. Give this short-legged girl a ball and she is absolutely whole. She’ll chase it, carry it proudly, bring it back with a gentle mouth, and politely release it so she can put her foot on it and move it around for you. Throwing it again is NOT a requirement. Her stamina is roughly as short as her legs. Birdie May is a fetch champion built for very enthusiastic short shifts, followed by a well-earned break to sploot on the kitchen floor. Birdie May is the kind of dog we can picture right in the middle of things. Kids running around, people coming and going, another dog nearby, somebody helping her get her beloved tennis ball out from under the couch ... she'll bot bring the happiness and be part of it. She is confident and affectionate with people, comfortable meeting men, wonderfully tolerant of handling, and has a habit of rolling onto her back when the attention gets particularly good. She has been lovely with children, and because she can be a rough-and-tumble little lady when the party gets going, we think she'd be especially fun with active kids who are steady enough to enjoy and match her fun enthusiasm. She is also wonderfully dog friendly. Birdie May meets new dogs easily, shares human attention nicely, and has shown us that even her precious ball can be peacefully enjoyed around other dogs. She has a fairly calm and independent nature around her canine friends, but her foster shared that she has a rowdy side. Think short-legged WrestleMania with snorts. Because of that play style, dogs around her size or larger will probably make the most natural playmates. She has done well around smaller dogs too, so we are not ruling it out. And yes, we need to return to the tennis ball. Birdie LOVES her ball. Capital letters are warranted here. She can become very focused when she knows one is nearby, but what we love is how gentle she remains with her people. She takes and releases the ball softly, and we saw no concerning guarding behavior toward people or dogs. Sometimes she simply needs the ball put away and a change of scenery before her little brain remembers that other activities exist. For a family that thinks having a resident fetch enthusiast/ball-devoted girl sounds fun rather than inconvenient, Birdie is going to be an absolute hoot! Despite all this talk of athletics, Birdie May is decidedly not campaigning to become your next hiking partner. She gets hot quickly and doesn't always have the good sense to call her own timeout, especially when a ball is involved. Her family will need to be thoughtful about warm weather, keep outdoor play and walks appropriately short, and make sure excitement doesn't outrun her ability to cool herself down. Her ideal adventures are much more charming anyway- backyard fetch before the day heats up, air-conditioned living-room antics, neighborhood hangs, and getting chauffeured around in a wagon at the kids' little-league game like the tiny queen she knows herself to be. Birdie May has also been exposed to a cat and may be able to share a home with a calm, dog-savvy feline with appropriate introductions and supervision. She may have some interest in chasing, so we wouldn't call her a plug-and-play cat roommate, but a confident cat who isn't looking for a canine best friend could potentially be a match. What really stands out with Birdie is how wonderfully unbothered she is. New people, dogs, noises, activity and the general chaos of a busy day doesn't rattle her one bit.She wanders around, collecting affection, investigated her surroundings and generally behaving like a woman with very few concerns beyond the whereabouts of the nearest tennis ball. Birdie May isn't asking for mountaintops or marathon adventures. Give her a fun-loving home, people who appreciate a little chaos and comedy, room for some indoor zooming, sensible breaks from the heat, and a respectable tennis-ball budget.
