How to Apply to Adopt a Pet

Applying to adopt a pet through LBC is a straightforward process designed to help organizations find the best homes for their animals. This guide walks you through every step.

Before You Start

To submit an adoption application, you'll need:

  • A verified LBC account — Create one for free if you don't have one
  • Basic personal information — Contact details, household info, and references
  • A pet in mind — Browse the directory and find a pet you'd like to adopt

Note: Some organizations may have additional requirements (home visits, vet references, etc.). These will be noted on the pet's detail page.

Step 1: Find a Pet

Start by browsing the pet directory at /pets. Use filters to narrow down by type, breed, age, size, and location. When you find a pet you're interested in, click through to their Pet Detail Page to read the full description and verify they're a good fit.

Step 2: Click "Apply to Adopt"

On the pet's detail page, click the Apply to Adopt button. If you're not logged in, you'll be prompted to sign in or create an account first.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form

The adoption application form includes several sections:

Your Information

  • Full name
  • Email address (prefilled from your account)
  • Phone number
  • Street address, city, state, and zip code
  • Best time to contact you

Household Information

  • Type of residence (house, apartment, condo, townhouse)
  • Do you rent or own? (If renting, landlord contact info may be required)
  • Number of adults and children in the home
  • Ages of any children
  • Is everyone in the household aware of and excited about the adoption?

Pet History & Experience

  • Have you owned pets before? If yes, what types?
  • Current pets — species, age, spayed/neutered status, and temperament
  • Previous pets — what happened to them? (Organizations want to know you're committed)
  • Veterinary reference — name and phone number of your current or past vet
  • Experience level — first-time owner, experienced, or professional
  • Lifestyle & Home Environment

    • How many hours will the pet be alone per day?
    • Do you have a fenced yard?
    • Where will the pet sleep?
    • Who will be the primary caregiver?
    • What happens to the pet during vacations or emergencies?

    Preferences & Expectations

    • Why do you want to adopt this specific pet?
    • Are you looking for a companion, family pet, working partner, or other?
    • Are you prepared for the financial responsibilities of pet ownership (food, vet care, emergencies)?

    References

Most organizations require 2-3 personal references (not family members):

    • Name, relationship, phone number, and email
    • References should be people who can vouch for your responsibility and character

    Step 4: Review and Submit

Before submitting, review your entire application for accuracy. Incomplete or inaccurate applications may be delayed or rejected.

Click Submit Application. You'll receive a confirmation on screen and via email.

    What to Expect After Submission

    Immediate

    • A confirmation email with your application reference number
    • The pet's status may change to Pending to indicate an application is being processed

    Within 1-3 Days

    • The organization reviews your application
    • They may contact you via email, phone, or LBC messaging for follow-up questions
    • You can check your application status anytime at /adoptions

    Timeline Expectations

    StageTypical Timeline
    Application receivedImmediately
    Initial review1-3 business days
    Reference checks2-5 business days
Home visit (if required)Scheduled within 1 week
    Decision3-14 days total

Times vary by organization. High-volume shelters may process faster; smaller rescues with volunteer staff may take longer.

    Tips for a Successful Application

    • Be honest — Organizations can verify information; dishonesty is grounds for denial
    • Be thorough — Complete every field; empty fields can slow review
    • Respond promptly — Check your email and LBC messages regularly after applying
    • Ask questions — Use the messaging feature if you're unsure about anything
    • Be patient — Organizations are often volunteer-run and may have limited staff
